Akron Power Squadron Sail Class

Sail 101 and Sail 102

The United States Power Squadron is a volunteer organization dedicated to improving the skills of its members.   Courses are taught by volunteer members of local Squadrons.  Akron Power Squadron offers a variety of courses, including the Sail Class.  Other class schedules can be found at its web site, www.akronpowersquadron.com.

The USPS Sail Course was developed by volunteer members of USPS.   Materials on this web site are copyrighted by USPS.

The USPS Sail Course is geared to both new sailors and sailors who want to increase their sailing knowledge and skills.

Experienced Sailors will find the Advanced Sail module more challenging to them.

Basic Sail (Sail 101) is designed to tell a beginning sailor what he or she needs to know if they wish to hop in their first sailboat and sail it in average weather conditions..

It covers the types of sailboats and sailboat design factors; parts of the sailboat; sailing upwind and downwind; basic marlinspike;  and basic navigational rules.

Advanced Sail (Sail 102) covers more advanced material, such as wind forces, sailboat stability and balance;  the finer points of sail trim;  spinnaker handling;  an  introduction to racing;  heavy weather sailing;  and more detailed navigation rules.

Akron's Class supplements the material with selected video material on the topics.  In addition, we show a 15 minute "cruising" video before each class to highlight some other benefits of the "sailing life".  Power boaters will enjoy these boating destinations, as well!
